- Bestlog, project initiated by the European Commission, aimed at sharing information for improvements in supply chain management.
- Centre for Sustainable Transportation, part of the University of Winnipeg, supporting policymakers in their decisions concerning the Canadian transportation system.
- Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS), a management tool for assessing, reporting and improving corporate performance on sustainability.
- ERA-NET TRANSPORT (ENT) is a sustainable network of national transport research programmes in Europe and a service platform for programme managers to initiate transnational cooperation.
- Food Climate Research Network, an interdisciplinary, intersectoral initiative for researching and promoting the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the UK food chain.
- Freight Best Practice, founded by the UK Department for Transport, disseminates information free of charge to the freight industry on topics of fuel, developing skills, materials and systems, operational efficiency and performance management.
- Global Reporting Initiative enables organizations to explain their sustainability performance in understandable and informative terms.
- TREATISE, a European Commission-funded project which was completed in June 2007. The manuals and applications for training in sustainable transport are available from the site.
- Green Logistics is a four-year research programme, funded by the EPSRC (UK government scheme), concerning the sustainability of logistic systems and supply chains.
- SmartWay Transport Partnership is a collaboration between the American EPA and the freight industry to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution.
- Zerofootprint, is a non-profit organization that creates products and services to help organizations and individuals reduce their footprint on the environment.
- IVL, Swedish Environmental Research Institute, an independent research body that, since 1966, has been involved in the development of solutions to environmental problems on behalf of the business sector and the community. In the transport sector, most of IVL's work focuses on 'real-world' emission measurements, emission models and the analysis of abatement measures to limit air emissions. IVL has started a close cooperation with NTM.
- NTM, Swedish Network for Transport and Environment. NTM is a non-profit organization, initiated in 1993 and aiming at establishing a common base of values on how to calculate the environmental performance for various modes of transport.
In addition to these initiatives by governments and non-profit organizations there are also a number of interesting commercial initiatives:
- CarbonView, software solutions for developing and monitoring the carbon footprint of companies.
- Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes, indexes for understanding the financial performance of sustainability-driven companies worldwide.
- EcoTransIT, a method for offsetting emissions and energy consumption from various forms of transport.
- FTSE4Good Index Series, for measuring the performance of sustainable companies and for facilitating investments in these companies.
